Being a first-time parent can be daunting, but useful and practical aides make the milestone easier and less scary. Sharon Moodley formed the BumBumz brand to help give parents peace of mind. Her range of infant car seat covers and baby nests were designed to curb new-baby fears.
How did your business start?
My business started a couple of years ago when my grandkids were born. I recollected vividly the days my sons were babies and I would be terrified of rolling over them. When my grandkids came along I saw a baby nest picture and immediately knew I had to make this so that my daughters-in-law would not have to go through the same fear I had as a young mother. When the baby nests gained popularity, I began getting lots of orders and the rest is history.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
I chose to work from my home in Pietermaritzburg because I had enough space due to my “empty nest”.
How did you find your premises?
I operate from home and use one bedroom as my office and another for sewing.
Why are they ideally suited to your business?
I have enough space and don’t need to worry about renting a space. I also have the convenience of working at any time.
Who are your neighbours?
Residential families and a smallholding.
What are the shop rental / sales prices like in this area?
Typically, the area demands about R120 p/m2 if I had to set-up shop at the local mall.
How many people go through your store each day?
I see about 30 clients a day but this depends on adverts I run, which generally has a wider reach.
Do you have any expansion plans?
I’d love to grow the brand and target hospitals, and create more awareness nationally. I am also considering doing an EXPO at some point.
Do you operate online as well?
I have an active Facebook page.
What’s your most popular item?
The products are individually handmade and not mass produced, using 100% cotton fabrics. The baby nest is most popular, followed by infant car seat covers. I also do feeding pillows, which are made upon request.
