Durban is known for its casual laid-back take on feasting, but there are some restaurants producing elegant-looking and well-thought-out flavours. Here are a few restaurants making a mark in KZN.
Granny Mouse Country House
Nestled in the Midlands, the Granny Mouse Country House is a farmhouse, home to a bistro and The Eaves fine dining restaurant. The restaurant’s menu changes seasonally to ensure that the dishes on offer excite guests and keep the culinary flair fresh. On the menu you will find dishes like the house smoked lamb loin with pan-fried Brussels sprouts and mint, toasted sunflower seed-crusted oyster mushrooms, sunflower seed brittle and mint jus.
Durban lifestyle blogger, Nicola Meyer, who writes for the Run on Coffee blog, frequents Granny Mouse Country House and has experienced the five-course wine pairing dinner. She says The Eaves restaurant is “a warm and intimate space to enjoy delicious creative food paired with excellent wines.”
9th Avenue Bistro
Owned and run by Graham and Gina Neilson, 9th Avenue Bistro presents elegant modern interpretations of classics, and cutting edge dishes. The bistro also won the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award in 2013, 2014 and 2015. You will find an array of dishes on offer, such as the pork fillet with charcoal-roasted belly, smokey apple chutney, shallot purée and ginger parkin.
The Oyster Box Hotel
Offering an array of exquisite dining experiences, guests can expect nothing less than culinary style and innovation. The Chef’s Table presents you with a five-course meal while watching all the action in the kitchen. The Wine Cellar Private Dining offers a six-course meal, giving a personal yet sophisticated touch. Each dish is elegant and made in unique style.
Big Easy
This is a classic and sophisticated venue for an incredible fine dining experience in Durban. The Beverly Hills Hotel has a few places to experience fine dining, one of which is Ernie Els’s Big Easy restaurant. The Big Easy offers a dining experience where you can enjoy life’s extravagances. The fare is of high quality, carefully plated and explores the best of traditional South African flavours.
