With everyone glued to their smartphones these days, there’s a mobile app for almost anything. If you’re looking for deals on eating out, or want to be healthy when eating in, here are two apps to try.
The Entertainer
Established in 2001, The Entertainer started in Dubai but has since expanded to 17 countries around the world. The app offers 2-for-1 deals on restaurants, spas, hotels and other lifestyle-related products. Buy the book or download the city-specific app and then browse offers by area [for example, Craighall Park], search for the service you’re after [I really need a manicure] or view the app’s newest offers.
I found the app simple to use, with a large variety of offers from high quality suppliers. A friend and I went to Aura Skincare Clinic in Parkhurst for a shellac manicure each and paid for only one – that’s R300 saved. I then used the app while out for dinner at Sun City and got one free main course from The Raj curry house, which meant I saved another R100 or so. Especially if you eat out regularly, this is an app that’s worth every cent.
HealthyFood Switch
Health is on everyone’s lips these days and the recently launched HealthyFood Switch app from Discovery Vitality ties into this consumer need. Developed by the George Institute for Global Health, the app was originally launched in Australia and has now reached our shores. It’s available to everyone (not just Discovery members): once you’ve downloaded it, simply scan the barcode on the item and you’re instantly presented with nutritional information, as well as healthier alternatives if they exist.
Although the app has a way to go in terms of expanding its sparse database, it’s still superhandy to have in your pocket while you’re grocery shopping. Best of all? It’s free.
