Belthazar has a stellar reputation amongst locals and tourists, alike. It’s time we went to try it for ourselves.

When walking around the V and A Waterfront, one out of the hundreds of restaurants that always stood out for me, was Belthazar. The waiters in their dapper white suits and starched aprons, and the hostesses who welcome you to try some of the delicious beef you’ve heard so much about, makes it difficult to resist heading in and spoiling yourself. The time had come for me to finally dip my toe in the Belthazar pool.

Upon entering, I decided to enjoy the impressive covered outside area for my starters and a glass of wine.

To begin the evening, I had the tangy, deep-fried camembert lightly drizzled with a contrastingly sweet, cranberry sauce. With this meal, I paired elegantly with a glass of Belthazar house Sauvignon Blanc. Crispy, light and delectable, the first course was off to a fabulous start.

Upon moving inside, where the interior is impressively decorated with stylish trims, it remained effortlessly cosy, I dived into the caprese salad. The bocconcini balls melted in my mouth, while the fresh tomato and rocket, combined with zesty basil pesto, gave it that authentic caprese flavour.

It was time for the main meal and I had decided to indulge in the best of both worlds with the house special, meat and fish combo, recommended to me by my friendly and knowledgeable waiter. The Mozambiquan prawns and my standard cut of melt-in-your-mouth rump steak was a match made in heaven. I opted for a mellow merlot house blend to go along with my meal and the iconic onion blossom side was quite a spectacular sight.

After all that, being the dessert-fanatic I am, I couldn’t resist a taste of the chocolate brownie, paired with a decadent whole-milk chocolate sauce and home-made ice-cream. This scrumptious, classic dessert paired well with a classic port and ended off my evening with a bang.

Belthazar - inside tables at night

Belthazar is definitely one for the books. Whether you’re off to enjoy a night with friends, have a quiet one with family, there’s something for everyone at this prestigious Cape restaurant. I’ll be sure to book my spot again very soon.
