Handles Inc, which opened in Kramerville in January, have taken the traditional concept of a door handle and expanded it into something far more exciting – door handles as a decorative piece. Barry Tonkil, partner, tells us more.
How did your business start?
In 2001, during the construction boom we saw a gap in the market, and Handles Inc. opened its first store in Cape Town in October 2002. By focussing on offering quality products and service excellence, Handles Inc sets its belief that style and functional excellence make up the home of today, and even those of the future. Our five stores across the country have a wide range of handles, door controls and mechanisms, specialised window fittings, custom-made and designed ironmongery, bathroom fittings and a number of accessories. We keep up with the latest trends and demands, and pride ourselves on being a one stop shop for different handles to suit any home or building design.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
We wanted a central and accessible location, and with Kramerville’s status as a design hub, securing space for a showroom was the logical step.
How did you find your premises?
We made use of a local agent who was able to help us find the right space for our brand.
Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
The building and vicinity has businesses that complement what we offer, it being a design hub.
Who are your neighbours?
Streamlight and Batuku Interiors.
What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Reasonable.
How many people visit your store each day?
We have decent traffic as people get used to the shop.
Do you operate online as well?
We have an informative website and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/handlesinc) and plan to launch an e-commerce component.
Do you have any expansion plans?
We have five stores in Bree Street Cape Town, Tygervalley, Somerset West, Umhlanga and Kramerville and plan to have a branch in every metropolitan area.
What’s your most popular product range?
Olivari, Mandelli, Formani and Basana – we are the exclusive stockists of these brands.
