High tea is a much-loved British tradition and thanks to the five-star Boardwalk Hotel at the Port Elizabeth beachfront, you can enjoy this wonderfully indulgent experience in the Bay.
The Boardwalk’s high tea is served in the hotel’s elegant Lobby Lounge every Saturday afternoon. It is ideal for a catch-up with the gal pals, a stylish sit-down with your significant other, and for special events like baby showers, with all the fuss taken out of the catering by the hotel’s kitchen staff led by executive chef Paul Bain.
The changing menu
The high tea spread changes every weekend which means that, even on repeat visits, there’s always something new and different to tuck into. When we stopped by a few weeks ago we found an abundance of traditional treats that included a gorgeously moist Victoria sponge, scones and macaroons among plenty of other temptations.
“Classics such as cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches and freshly baked scones with cream and jam, are a staple of our high tea, while our signature mushroom cream and thyme pies, and our goat’s cheese baked with tomato jam, are firm favourites among our guests,” Bain says.
Cakes might include pistachio and chocolate gateau with granadilla curd, chocolate ganache Swiss roll and red velvet cupcakes, while bite-sized sticky bits like Florentines, chocolate eclairs and brandy snaps filled with raspberry cream, are also likely to please the palate.
Savoury high tea menu
Savouries might include creamy mushroom pie; ham, cheese and onion quiche; curried chicken mayo with lettuce and apricots on seeded bread; and olive and sun-dried tomato palmiers.
Guests can enjoy teas and coffees, as well as homemade lemonade, ginger beer and iced tea. “We are constantly evolving our offering, including our selection of teas,” Bain says. “Ginger and lemon grass tea is our newest arrival, alongside homemade bubble teas which are an invigorating choice on a warm day.”
High Tea at the Boardwalk is from 2.30 to 3.30pm, with a second sitting from 4pm to 5pm, every Saturday.
