Drive along Lilian Ngoyi Road, and the vast glass doors and windows of Inside Out Home Boutique show off a variety of colours, textures and wonderful decor items. It’s not easy to drive by.
How did your business start?
I worked for an established decor company for nine years, where I learned all things decor and grew an even greater passion for interior decor. When the company closed, I decided to pursue my passion and start my own shop.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
The area is great, and it’s easily accessible with parking never being a problem.
How did you find your premises?
I worked from Karrin Hatfield’s space (she was previously in the building), so when she closed her business, it was a no-brainer to take it over. Our clients already knew it as a decor outlet.
Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
The shop has great road frontage with beautiful glass windows to show off our gorgeous products.
Who are your neighbours?
We’re lucky enough to have a prestigious chair company, Peter JA Stuart, as our neighbours – the products they sell are of great quality and complement our store beautifully and their style is different from ours, which is perfect as we don’t clash.
What are the shop rental /sales prices like in this area?
Fairly high because of the locale – rental is related to the area and surroundings, and we are very lucky to call this beautiful space ours.
What is your shop footprint?
Home decor is very personal, and totally depends on how our customers are feeling each day. We’re very lucky to deal with many of Durban’s great interior decorators who keep us constantly busy – we’re also blessed with loyal customers who travel from near and far to visit us.
Do you have any expansion plans?
Yes, we’ll be expanding in the next month, but not far – still on the same premises, just into the larger space. We’re very excited for the future.
Do you operate online as well?
Yes, on our website. We continuously receive new stock, so our online store is purely for our range of furniture/headboards/mirrors and scatters.
What’s your most popular item?
Definitely our scatter cushions – we keep a large range as it’s the quickest way to make a change to your home.
