Opened on 15 January this year, Hair & Chats caters to an upmarket clientele looking for trendy hairstyles. Business owner Lerato Kholoanyane tells us more about her business and the latest shop in one of Africa’s richest locations – Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.
How did your business start?
Following a four-year stint as an internal PR manager for a listed mining company, I started my own hair-and-beauty business which saw the opening of the first Hair & Chats in November 2015 in Rivonia. This second shop in Nelson Mandela Square opened in January. It started with my obsession with importing human hair for myself and then sold some to friends and colleagues. The love for the business kicked off and my interest in beauty and hair has only grown since then.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
It’s been my dream to open a business in Sandton because the location is perfect for our target market as we offer a five-star service in line with the standard expected from Nelson Mandela Square.
How did you find your premises?
I was actually looking for a space to open an African cuisine restaurant, and the shop was mentioned in my discussions with the centre management. After viewing, I liked the space and took it.
Why are they ideally suited to your business?
The location is conveniently located close to major businesses in and around Sandton.
Who are your neighbours?
Bukhara Restaurant, David Tlale clothing shop and the Michelangelo Hotel and Collective.
What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Reasonable and they depend on space being rented.
How many people visit your business each day?
We have 10 to 20 clients each day.
Do you have any expansion plans?
There are plans to open two more salons in Melville and Rosebank by next year.
Do you operate online as well?
Our website is very informative and we are currently working on selling our products online with delivery included.
What’s your most popular service?
Men’s haircuts, nails and weaves.
