Since it first opened in 2013, Once in Cape Town has become synonymous with good vibes, great service, and unforgettable experiences for both locals and visitors to this hostel/hotel in the Mother City. Having won countless awards, the team of impressive entrepreneurs behind this award-winning spot expanded in November, opening Once in Joburg.
Much like its Capetonian older brother, Once in Joburg is all about sharing a love for travel, encouraging a strong spirit of adventure, and, most importantly, spreading a passion for South Africa and its cities. Kim Whitaker, one of the founders and owners, says that the move to Joburg was completely natural. “Joburg really is the gateway into Africa. In terms of arrivals, most travellers land in Johannesburg, and while Cape Town is a stunning tourist destination, Joburg ticks all the boxes in searching for a truly African city. We wanted to show people what an amazingly vibrant city it is, bringing the Once ethos of great experiences and great stories to its visitors.”
When searching for a location to open the new spot, Whitaker says Braamfontein was an obvious choice. “I climbed on the Gautrain, and stopped at all of its stations, taking the time to walk around and get to know each area, penning down my experiences as I went. What struck me was that when you climb off at Park Station everyone else is also on foot, making it a much more comfortable and tourist-friendly space for travellers who’ve just arrived. It creates a real African experience.” And with Once in Joburg’s proximity to theatres, art galleries, markets, and restaurants, guests have an unlimited list of activities to keep them busy, whether they stay for a day or a month.
Downstairs, The Immigrant bar and restaurant is already poised to be a favourite new place to start/spend/end an evening in town. Following Once’s philosophy, The Immigrant is a partnership with local restaurateurs, with a menu that’s all about sharing, making friends, and getting to know each other. Expect delicious sharing boards, sharing beer buckets, and loads of new friends.
