There is a historical tradition of honouring important occasions with celebratory cake. Shamolia Ramluckan focused on such traditions by baking with her daughters, and her journey of love turned into a thriving business: Queen of Tarts.

How did your business start?

My kids have been my biggest inspiration. I always knew I wanted to be hands-on and involved with my kids which meant that when birthdays came around I was always eager to make their birthday cakes. I didn’t realise how much I enjoyed it until I started baking and experimenting for no reason. It was a creative outlet and another reason to spend more time with my girls, having fun in the kitchen. What started as a passion turned into my business, Queen of Tarts.

Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

The north coast has become one the most sought after out-of-city residential areas on the coast. I had fallen in love with the lifestyle and always feel like I am on holiday in the area.

How did you find your premises?

I work from home. I have always loved cooking and baking so when I designed my home I ensured that my kitchen would be my priority as it is where I spend most of my time.

Why are they ideally suited to your business?

I am a business woman and most importantly a mum. Life can become so chaotic at times, so running the business from home allows me the flexibility of balancing my work life and home life.

Who are your neighbours?

I have different families as neighbours as I work in a residential area.

What are the shop rental / sales prices like in this area?

Fortunately for me I save on rent as I work from home.

How many people go through your store each day?

I see about three to five clients a day.

Do you have any expansion plans?

At the rate in which my business is growing, there are definitely plans to open my very own bakery.

Do you operate online as well?

I am active on social media where I showcase my work and where clients can send enquiries.

What’s your most popular item?

My most popular item is definitely my personalised decadent cream tarts which are piped with a rich and creamy smooth custard filling with a hint of cinnamon, in between crunchy, buttery biscuit layers and topped with strawberries, macaroons, meringues, fresh flowers and chocolates of your choice.
