Opened late last year Remo’s Libertà is the newest addition to the Remo’s family, and its second branch in Johannesburg, the first being local favourite Remo’s Maximilliano in Sunninghill. Sitting proudly on Nelson Mandela Square, the decor in Libertà pays tribute to the square’s late, great namesake, with nods to boxing and history evident in the hundreds of black and white photographs lining the walls. In the centre of this is a large mural including the name Libertà – an Italian word meaning “freedom”.

Italian decor

Every inch of the decor illustrates the pride in attention to detail and originality felt by the team behind this restaurant. From vintage pressed ceilings and patterned floor tiles to cloth napkins and personalised coasters, nothing has been forgotten on the journey to making customers feel comfortable and cared for. Open and airy, the outside tables are perfect for evening drinks, and booths inside make an ideal setting for an intimate meal.

Accompanied by a warm atmosphere and welcoming staff, the food is the ultimate star of any time spent at Libertà. Specialising in fine Italian food, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any other excuse to snack that you might find throughout the day. Begin your day with fresh coffee and a tasty eggs Benedict, or come back later and take advantage of the incredible pizzas and pastas – but start with the arancini or halloumi fingers.

What makes Remos different?

With so many Italian restaurants in Joburg to choose from, a few things set Libertà apart and make it worth a visit. The attention paid to customers makes everyone feel welcome, with managers making an effort to personally check on each meal. Add to this the delicious, high-quality food, and you’ll be wanting to come back for seconds.

Though not the most affordable Italian spot in the neighbourhood, Libertà is definitely a great option if you’re looking for something a little special. Take a look at the online menu, and make sure that you arrive hungry.
