Just outside Port Elizabeth lies the third largest national park in South Africa: The Addo Elephant National Park. Renowned for its majestic elephants it is also now home to Sylvester the lion. If you’re considering a visit to the park and surrounding area, then Zuurberg Mountain Village is close enough.
Stay
Set high up on the Zuurberg Mountains, the 150-year-old Zuurberg Mountain Village has breathtaking views of its surrounds, which includes the elephant park.
After a scenic drive up the mountain on a cold winter’s afternoon, we were greeted with a warm fire and drink. The hotel has an old world charm and its location promises privacy. Rooms are beautifully furnished with lots of windows and clear doors to enjoy the stunning views. The hotel offers amazing five-course dinners and buffets. The food is delicious and portions are generous. It is real country food that warms the soul.
Explore
The hotel offers private game drives. The weather was freezing but my husband and I were game for anything, so we took our chances with the very capable game ranger, Langton.
It was well worth it as we saw herds of elephants, zebra, buffalo, kudu and an amazing display of birdlife. We didn’t see Sylvester but that’s the beauty of being among wildlife: you just don’t know what is going to happen. Apart from game drives, you can also go horseback riding, hiking and sign up for an elephant safari. The hotel has a delightful spa to unwind and relax.
