Tequila: “A regional specific name for a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65km northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco.”

Well that’s according to Google, but according to me it’s a tasty little shooter best served with salt and a slice of lemon or orange – and a burrito to boot. I’ve also heard rumours that in small quantities, tequila actually helps with digestion and has significantly less sugar than most other alcoholic beverages – cheers to that! So what better way to suss-out Durban’s offering of Mexican cuisine than via a tequila bar hop? Here are the 031’s best Mexican-themed spots – each with its own unique vibe and menu.

We kicked off with our first tequila at Four15 in Durban North. From burritos to quesadillas, Four15 offers fresh Mexican food in an upbeat environment, branded with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Simply order and pay at the food bar, take a seat and soak up the vibe. If you’re dining with a bunch of mates then why not order the Tequila Server? It’s simply a tray with 500ml of tequila (20 small shots) or you can opt for the 250ml version. Either way – just make sure you’ve got a designated driver or the Uber app installed.

El Toro

If you’re looking for tequila and tapas, then hit up El Toro. Our second shot went down nicely with El Toro’s authentic Mexican atmosphere and bright, cantina-slash-Día de los Muertos inspired decor. While you’re there, treat yourself to delicious margaritas or book your spot for Taco and Tequila Tuesdays. If you fancy something sweet then chocolate sauce and churros are the only way to go!

Taco Zulu

Sombrero Rating: 3 Sombreros
Taco Zulu is a well-known spot for any Durbanite who frequents Florida Road, so we thought it best to have our third and final tequila here. Taco Zulu is a Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar, with a unique South African twist. You can sit down for contemporary Mexican cuisine including moreish nachos and enchiladas, or kick off your weekend with a selection of margaritas and cocktails.
