As the old saying goes, never trust a skinny chef. This is the thought that inspired Fred Roed, the CEO and founder of an exciting programme of learning experiences for entrepreneurs, to name his company Heavy Chef.

“We celebrate people who walk the talk, who practice what they preach – who eat their own food. In a world of talkers, we believe it’s the doers that are going to change it,” says Fred.

The result is what Fred refers to as “magical learning experiences”, where entrepreneurs on the African continent are both inspired and empowered. “It started as a side project of my previous business, a digital marketing agency, and then evolved into my main gig when I left the agency world. Heavy Chef creates inspirational experiences for graduates, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. We offer monthly entrepreneur events, workshops and tours. We also aim to tell the stories of entrepreneurs in this inspiring country of ours. We’re now running events and workshops in Joburg, Cape Town, Khayelitsha – and soon in Philippi, Maboneng and Soweto.”

Though Fred may have only started running the company full time in February last year, it’s something that he’s been passionate about for a lot longer than that.

“I’m deeply passionate about entrepreneurship, and during my time in digital marketing, I became heavily invested in the start-up scene. I believe that this country needs constant stimulus and cohesion in this space, and that’s what Heavy Chef is doing,” he says.

“In a digitally-obsessed world, we’re taking talented people into active learning environments where they can meet their business heroes, learn from them and put into action those lessons. We aim to inspire people to start awesome things, and then empower them to succeed.”

Upcoming topics include personal branding, newsletter marketing, Instagram and even SexTech, and talks from personalities like Nic Haralambous, Bruce Whitfield, Maps Maponyane, Craig Rodney, Heidi Patmore, Jason Bagley and many more.

Fred says the Heavy Chef community is perfect for anyone who feels an itch to create something that will change the world just a little bit – or a big bit.

“Our community is filled with ‘crazy ones’, misfits, thinkers and creators. They’re an awesome, curious lot.”
