The decor at Africology spas include sweetie jars brimming with mineral salts and essential oils

When I think of spas I generally think of fountains and panpipe music. I don’t imagine sweetie jars filled to the brim, crystal decanters overflowing with coffee beans and a stylish chrome bar where I can relax with a cup of mint tea. But Africology spas are designed like no other spa I’ve seen.

The day I went to their Parkhurst store, I was frazzled from being late, but when I got inside I instantly relaxed. I was struck by the inky black interior, the stylish white leather chairs, the bowls of fuchsia blooms dotted around, and the pyramids of their signature candles laid out in colour blocks.

In Gratitude & Love

As part of their Mother’s Day campaign, I was treated to their In Gratitude and Love package. This kicked off with a 60-minute full-body massage where the therapist used warm crystals to stimulate blood flow and release tension. I can honestly say that I’d never been massaged with crystals before, but I loved the experience, which made my muscles feel incredibly relaxed, and relieved some tension in my neck.

Proudly South African

I particularly loved the smell of the products. They’re all made from distinctly South African ingredients such as rooibos, African potato, aloe and marula. In fact all of Africology’s products are “influenced by traditional African wisdom and reiki techniques”, and I felt this difference in their treatments. Best of all, their products are 100% natural and biodegradable.

The 30-minute deep-cleansing facial was a highlight. My skin positively glowed afterwards. I then wandered upstairs and perused the beautifully packaged products: brown glass bottles conjuring up images of the pharmacies of yesteryear and containing everything from body tonics to serums to shampoos. I wanted to buy them all.

Africology offers various specials and packages throughout the year and any of these would make a welcome gift for a loved one, or as a treat for yourself – a bit of bliss after a hard week.
