Andrea Brand is an artist and surface designer based in Cape Town. All her designs are unique and contemporary and can be digitally transferred onto a variety of interior surfaces, including textiles, wood, wall coverings, leather and metal.
She’s currently preparing for a big drive into the European market to expand the foothold she already has in parts of Germany. With her art and colour therapy background, she understands the effect colour has on our state of mind and her nature-inspired designs creates a sense of connection and flow in home and work spaces. Always keen to collaborate, Andrea has partnered with Orms in their wallpaper collection, as well as in a yoga clothing range and in the design and production of high-end overnight bags.
Andrea’s love for travel, fabrics and nature comes together in unique designs and her latest collection, Living Ritual, will be launched at Maison & Objet in Paris this September.
Q: How did you start your business?
A: I was on an art sabbatical in Berlin in 2013 after having sold my therapy centre, and realised that being creative every day brings me a deeper sense of fulfilment. My journey with art started at 19 when I studied textile design and fine art at Ruth Prowse School of Art. I needed to get back to being an artist.
Q: What obstacles have you faced and how have you overcome them?
A: Getting into the design industry at age 46 had some challenges as entering a new industry relies on a network that is only built up over time. I was lucky to be discovered by Platform Creative Agency who selected some of my designs for the annual 100% Design show in 2016. That put my brand on the design map in South Africa.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
A: First and foremost nature inspires me. Travelling also expands my scope of exploration and coming across motives sparks new designs. I’m inspired continuously by other creatives, artists and designers.
