A day out in the Winelands often means hopping from one estate to the next, hassling for parking and ensuring there’s a designated driver to keep you safe on the road. Now with the “all in one” voucher for Anthonij Rupert Wyne and L’Ormarins estates, which allows you to discover fine wine, wonderful views and a unique museum scattered across two of the Cape’s most remarkable farms.
A day out begins at the Terra del Capo tasting room, with a chilled glass of Méthode Cap Classique, before a “road tram” takes a 10-minute scenic trundle across to neighbouring L’Ormarins Estates.
Here, the Franschhoek Motor Museum is heaven on earth for petrolheads. The museum’s collection includes 220 automobiles and motorbikes ranging from the early days of motoring to cutting-edge modern supercars. Eighty vehicles are on display at any one time, so if you ever wanted to drool over a McLaren F1 in the carbon-fibre flesh, here’s your chance.
From the museum, the tram runs back through the farm to deliver you to the Anthonij Rupert Tasting Room in the historic manor house, a refined space of antique furniture and clipped rose gardens. Take a seat in the lounge or out on the terrace, for the well-trained tasting room staff to guide you through the excellent Cape of Good Hope and Anthonij Rupert ranges. Then it’s down the hill for more wine (be glad you’re not driving!) in the modern Terra del Capo Tasting Room. The ranges focus on Italian cultivars, and their bright Pinot Grigio is perfect for summer dining.
Just as well, as the final stop is downstairs for an antipasti lunch overlooking the production cellar. Outdoor tables are available if you’d prefer a view, but the cool confines of the tasting room make for a welcome respite from the Franschhoek heat.
The set menu begins with a generous antipasti platter of local charcuterie and cheeses, alongside a fresh caprese salad. While you’re snacking on those, expect a selection of sharing bowls to arrive: think delicious deep-fried calamari with parsley-caper aioli, or tomato arancini stuffed with smoked mozzarella and basil pesto.
