It’s the middle of the year, and this not only signifies the start of the much-needed winter rains but also that festival season is upon us. We’re spoilt for choice in the Western Cape, but today we’re focusing on the upcoming festivals that not only celebrate art, food and wine but also the ‘hoods where they take place.

Taste the Helderberg (8 June)

Taste the wonderful bounty from Helderberg farms and vineyards at the annual showcase of excellent local food and wine with Taste the Helderberg on Friday, 8 June, at the NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. The food theatre, the latest addition to the food and drinks festival, will be in the form of a mesmerising chocolate buffet installation. For the first time, the event will be held on a Friday, meaning that visitors have the option of spending the entire weekend exploring the area once the festivities are over. goo.gl/Ft4oy7

Hermanus FynArts (8 to 17 June)

Hermanus FynArts is a celebration of the South African arts hosted in the popular winter destination of Hermanus. The 10-day festival will be filled with art exhibitions, music, workshops, talks, demonstrations, films and much more. Another element will be the ever-popular FynArts cookery demonstrations, which will include a tasting portion of the dishes being prepared and a paired wine. A highlight of the programme will be the posthumous presentation, on Saturday, 9 June, of the 2018 FynArts Legacy Award to music legend Hugh Masekela. hermanusfynarts.co.za

Tuning the Vine (13 June)

Now in its third year, Tuning the Vine, the inner city’s first wine route, brings the hottest streets and venues together in a scavenger hunt with a difference. Wednesday, 13 June, is not only the last event before the winter break, but it will also be the 25th installment. Look out for the Tuning the Vine fairies and popular Cape Town influencers The Wine Girl Cape Town (@thewinegirlcapetown), Friends of the Vine (@friendsofthevine), Selina Mutale (@audaciously_sels) and others who will be part of this year’s fun. tuningthevine.co.za
