Just 65km south of Durban, on 500ms of unspoiled beach in Kelso, is Happy Wanderers Holiday Resort. The iconic resort has been welcoming families through its doors since 1963, and recently underwent a major refurbishment – and now it’s your turn to experience this little slice of paradise.
Privately owned, Happy Wanderers is the perfect holiday or weekend away spot, with all the ingredients for a restful getaway right on your doorstep. With over five decades under its belt, plenty of memories have been made here. But that doesn’t mean the facilities are outdated – the current owners have been renovating and adding to the property since they first bought it in 2000, and when disaster struck in 2007 and the sea swept away a huge section of the resort, sections were rebuilt. As a result, the amenities are top-notch and up-to-date.
Guests can stay in one of 44 sea-facing self-catering apartments or in the caravan/camping sites. The camping sites have refurbished ablution blocks, with modern granite tops, urinals and baby baths. Once guests have had their fill of the wonderful warm Indian Ocean and beach, there are four swimming pools to explore. If visitors are feeling peckish or thirsty, they can head to The ‘Resu’-Wrecked Heron Ladies Bar & Restaurant, which boasts a sensational setting right on the beach and a restored boat (The Heron) inside! Guests also have access to a well-stocked superette.
Entertainment facilities include a games room, children’s outdoor play centre and outdoor chess, and there is organised entertainment in-season and over the weekend. The resort also features a small, equipped conference venue. Happy Wanderers also hosts weddings and events. For those with disabilities, an on-site floatable beach wheelchair allows access to the beautiful beach.
