This all-American favourite has been transformed through the years from fast food to gourmet grub. We take a look at where you can find the tastiest and all-round best burgers in PE.

Angelo’s Cafe

You’ll find this student pleaser in Walmer, Summerstrand and now there is a third branch just opened in Richmond Hill. Angelo’s has long been a popular for its budget-friendly beef, chicken, kudu or pork rib burgers, served with rustic fries or sweet-potato chips. Toss a couple of rashers of bacon and a slice of cheese on your roll to gourmet it up and it’ll still retain its good value. Although the speed of service at the Walmer branch can be a trifle relaxed, the food at all three branches is good. Overlooking Shark Rock Pier, the beach branch has the best view and the new kid will give the more established and often pricier outlets in Stanley Street a run for their money. Open from 8am to 10.30pm.

Salt

This casual Stanley Street eatery is roaringly popular with 20- to 30-somethings, thanks to its good, solid grub and friendly service. Burgers are the only items on Salt’s extensive, contemporary menu. The range of rolls includes ciabatta, banting and gluten-free options. Salt’s gourmet burgers include a spicy chorizo and jalapeño burger along with several other mouth-watering combos. The extensive cocktail menu served at the festive bar section helps put party people in the mood. During summer you can sit at an outside table and catch the Stanley Street vibe. Open from 7.30am (8am at weekends) till late.

BeerYard

Decent beer and a decent burger: what more could you want? BeerYard, which opened in Port Elizabeth last year as a craft beer garden and burger restaurant, specialises in both. And if you go on a Monday night you can enjoy any burger for just R48, but you may have to book ahead or you might end up queuing. Try the peri-peri chicken and pine burger, or the avo and blue cheese, served with chips and crispy battered onion rings. The chips are chunky and the craft beer selection is legendary. If you are too late to get an inside table, take a seat outside beneath the tent canopy next to the pool.
