Good coffee, scrumptious food and a convivial atmosphere – what more could you ask for from breakfast? These restaurants tick all the boxes

Chocolat Bistro
46 on Oxford
With the inviting French Provencal-inspired décor, the lavish outdoor seating area and wraparound porch, the awe-inspiring arbre de la vie (tree of life) and the oodles of fun to be had thanks to the kiddies’ castle, Chocolat Bistro is more than just a restaurant – it’s a place where you can kick back and relax. With a range of wholesome, modern dishes – all underscored with a French flourish of course – you’ll keep coming back until you’ve tried everything on the menu. Some of the delicious breakfasts on offer include the giant croissant – with smoked salmon, cream cheese, rocket, cherry tomatoes, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon and spring onion; chocolate de jeuner – comprising scrambled eggs, savoury mince, mushrooms and grilled cheddar on a slice of toast; and le Grande dé jeuner – bacon, eggs, pork sausage, fried tomato, mushrooms, chips, toast and preserves. And if you have a sweet tooth, fear not: the Brazilian nougat dark chocolate cake should certainly do the trick.

Breakfast 01

Ou Meul Bakery
Shop G40, Willowbridge Centre, 39 Carl Cronje, Bellville
It’s not a legend by now for nothing and with their classic brunches being served daily until 6pm, the most important meal of the day truly gets the royal treatment at Ou Meul. To give your taste buds something to look forward to, the menu features items like croque madame done to perfection and eggs benedict oozing eggy goodness. Then there’s the chorizo hash pan (sourdough toast, roasted potato, caramelised onion, chorizo, roasted red pepper, spring onion, cheddar cheese, sunny egg); meatball omelette (three egg-omelette, sourdough toast, pomodoro meatballs, mozzarella cheese, spring onion) and breakfast spring rolls (three bacon cheese spring rolls, scrambled egg, pomodoro sauce, basil pesto, mayonnaise). All the baked goods are made on site daily and the lineup includes brioche, rye bread and sweet treats like croissants, pain au chocolat, sticky buns and toasted banana bread.

Breakfast 03

Phizante Kraal
Nestled just outside Durbanville in an old stable dating from 1767, this beautiful eatery combines old and new in both its décor and food and the seasonal menus are a brilliant marriage between country style cooking and contemporary cuisine. With Saturdays being dedicated to brunches only, weekday breakfasts typically include the full farmer’s breakfast (scrambled eggs, streaky bacon, farm boerewors, fried mushrooms, cooked tomato, toasted country style bread with butter & jam); sweet corn flakes brioche French toast (with peanut butter cream, caramelised banana, nut brittle &
honey drizzle and salted caramel) and the utterly delicious chorizo and bean stew (chorizo tomato stew with chipotle, poached eggs, homemade basil pesto and toast).
