Richard Greig, the great grandson of Charles Greig has opened a concept store in the Michaelangelo, adjoining his Charles Greig jewellery store. Collective by Charles Greig showcases a unique collection of African designers and products for a high-end market including Ardmore ceramics and sculptures by Donald Greig.
How did your business start?
We already had the jewellery store and when the space became available next door, we started to think about what we could do with it – and the concept of the Collective by Charles Greig was born. My wife Nicky got very involved in sourcing artists and designers, travelling all around the country to meet with suppliers, as well as finding a home for her own cashmere collection – Black Sheep. The store opened in December 2015.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
Nelson Mandela Square is the leading destination for tourists to Johannesburg, with its new restaurants, the convention centre, the Gautrain and hotels. And of course, it attracts local high-end customers as well.
How did you find your premises?
We already had the Charles Greig jewellery store, and when the space next door opened up, we took it.
Why are they ideally suited to your business?
We like to be upstairs and a part of the Michelangelo Hotel, which is one of the most prestigious in the country, and the new store opens us up out into the mall. The beautiful archway is also a beautiful space to showcase our products.
Who are your neighbours?
We’re near to Bukhara, the well-known Indian restaurant, Hamleys, the international toy store and upstairs from the Luminance clothing store.
What are the shop rental / sales prices like in this area?
They are high-end rentals, considering the area and the centre.
How many people go through your store each day?
Around ten to twenty.
Do you have any expansion plans?
We will be opening another store in Dubai and possibly another in Cape Town.
Do you operate online as well?
We have a website but don’t do online sales. Our product is too limited and unique to offer that facility.
What’s your most popular item?
Zambezi Grace, a local luggage brand does very well. But we have such varied brands and products that there is no clear bestseller.
