When it comes to certain nooks and crannies in the area that is known as gems – and must-haves when for sale signs go up – the Northern Suburbs really has it all. In fact, there’s a wide variety of quiet tree-lined streets, different styles of properties and old and new homes that are popular with potential buyers on offer.

For starters, Plattekloof, with its array of spacious, sensible and modern homes, boasts glorious swathes of greenery – and city views too – and it’s especially popular with families who want to settle down in the area. Although it’s still within easy reach of the city, it’s far enough to escape at a moment’s notice, whether it’s to the nearby Winelands, Tygerberg Nature Reserve, beaches or convenience of Canal Walk. It is arguably one of the most sought-after residential areas in the Cape, and home to a great many palatial properties (which have been compared to parts of Constantia’s Steenberg region).

Panorama is also a haven for families who want to set down roots. The area includes the suburbs of Kaapzicht, Sonnedal and De Duin and here, properties range from small one-bedroom apartments to lavish four- or five-bedroom family homes. Some properties here are a tad older, but buyers have taken to renovating and upgrading their properties. This area tends to be a stepping-stone before moving to more affluent areas like Plattekloof, and the property market here is pretty active, catering for changing and growing family needs. With the proximity of excellent schools and world-class medical care, this neighbourhood is a dream for young families.

Burgundy Estate epitomises the appeal of estate living, something that’s particularly interesting in the context of the current semigration trend (the influx of Gauteng families moving to the Cape). Here, the name of the game is security, superior facilities, ultra-modern design sensibilities and, of course, location, location, location. If it’s tree-lined streets and newly built properties you’re after, this is just the ticket.

Edgemead comprises some 340ha, is predominantly English speaking, and according to the neighbourhood’s dedicated website prides itself on the distinct architecture that can be found here. This is where you’ll find great property value for money, various sectional title homes, solid three- or four-bedroom family houses, peaceful and tranquil streets where kids can play safely, excellent amenities and a village-like atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
