There are only a few restaurants in Durban that offer diners more than just tasty food and a pleasant ambiance. Eating out has been taken to a whole new level, so we take a look at the eateries offering unforgettable experiences.
Roma Revolving Restaurant
With 40 years in the business, Roma Revolving Restaurant is the only genuine revolving restaurant in South Africa and third of its kind built in the world. Set at the top of John Ross House, the restaurant is set on a speed control mechanism allowing for a revolution every 60 – 90 minutes. Owned by the Reelin Group and managed by the Leopardi brothers, this classic Italian restaurant still offers charming old-school service, 360 degree views of Durban and serves exquisite thermidor choice crayfish fillets in a creamy seafood sauce.
Dine on the only luxury floating restaurant and events venue in South Africa, while cruising around the Durban harbour and sea front. Opened in November 2014 by Nick Dranias, this five-star, 85-foot catamaran offers two decks, two bars and a dance floor. There are two-, three- and four-course menus, and special dietary needs are accommodated. Try the beef medallion on a bed of wilted baby spinach covered with a mushroom and gorgonzola sauce.
The Prep Room
The newest restaurant from Judd Campbell is The Prep Room: a shipping container structure created by Bloc Architects with urban chic interiors by JSD Interiors. Launched in June this year, The Prep Room is located in Glenwood Preparatory School. The kitchen and bar are built within the container on a higher level, while underneath the deck hosts the dining area overlooking the sports ground. Ideal for family get-togethers, especially for the popular Pasta Night every Friday.
This quirky cafe, situated at The Concierge Boutique Bungalows, is known for its signature red shipping container, artsy interiors, glass walls, and trendy outdoor space. Freedom Cafe was opened in 2010 by Neil Roake with the goal of serving delicious alfresco delights in a creative environment. Be sure to order the colourful Vietnamese summer rolls, with beetroot, feta, avo, spinach, coriander and nuoc cham dipper.
