Cape Town’s coffee culture scene and eateries- purveyed and frequented by anyone with a beard masking their face, tattoos of all colours inked on their limbs, whose preferred mode of transport is a scooter, skateboard or Airmax – are also some of the friendliest places for our beloved fur-fellows. Proof and woof enough that dog loving is trending.

Maria’s

Nestled in the quiet Dunkley Square in Gardens, owners of this Cape Town institution, Cleon Romano and Kate Wigley Romano, are, as Cleon describes, ‘dog-crazy’. Their Facebook page is testament to this with many a canine cutie striking a pose with left over lamb bones from the authentic Greek fair, which also includes keftedes, youvetsi and stuffed calamari amongst other dishes.

Liquorice & Lime

This city bowl favourite at the top of bustling Kloof Street, is a dog-owners mecca. Walk in any time during the weekend and you’re bound to see Capetonians and their dogs of all descriptions packed tightly into this quaint eatery, whose all-day breakfasts and daily specials are the big draw cards. If you’re lucky you’ll get to meet the resident furkids, Yoko and Jagger, who keep owner Dylan and his friendly staff on a tight leash.

Bootlegger Coffee Company

Every neighbourhood worth their weight in redevelopment and souring property prices needs a great coffee spot with free Wi-Fi, freshly pressed juice and sourdough sarmies. Enter Bootlegger Coffee Company in Sea Point, the suburb enjoying the biggest renaissance in Cape Town at the moment. Not only do they roast their own coffee beans but you can buy them too and while you’re waiting to pay, you’ll notice that this is not only the home of designer handbags but of dogs too- French and English Bulldogs, Italian Greyhounds and Pugs are regulars here.

The Backyard Grill

Also in Sea Point, is human and canine carnivore heaven, the Backyard Grill, who’s basic premise is to buy and braai- you choose the meat from the counter, it gets weighed, you add what sides you’d like before it’s whacked on one of the many braais in the courtyard and then served. Resident Boston Terrier, Moseley, is the host most nights, charming all the ladies and other dog lovers.
