We take a look at three of the hottest trends set to take on the drinks industry in this year
In 2017, drinks trends were all about going clean, natural and keeping things local as much as possible. With the new year upon us, there’s an opportunity for new drinks to take centre stage. Here are the 2018 drinks trends that you can expect to see.
Health is key
Much like in 2017, consumers this year will be placing most of their focus on drinks that not only taste good but will make you feel great too. Many people are moving closer to an alcohol-free lifestyle, and 2018 is set to feature a larger emphasis on protein-based beverages, especially for athletes. And while whey protein is set to remain popular because of its ease of digestion, plant-based protein lovers can also expect to see their options increase, as soy, oats and rice-based drinks stake their claim. Alternative protein sources are available in store and online at Wellness Warehouse.
Craft drinks reign supreme
We’ve experienced the craft beer and craft gin revolutions, but this year there’s set to be a rise in the number of craft sodas available on the market. The idea is that small-batch production and in-house craftsmanship will provide soda lovers with organic and natural products that are refreshing and delicious. Great on their own or as a mixer with your favourite spirit, the Craft Soda Company is the first South African company to create handcrafted craft sodas, which come in tasty flavours like Lemon Lime Soda, Cherry Lemonade and Cucumber Citrus, as well as a Heritage Tonic.
Rosé skyrockets
Rosé might have once been seen as the sweeter, less cultured younger sister to a classic red or white, but South African winemakers have shifted some of their focus in recent years to developing award-winning rosés and the results have been incredible. This year will see the rise of fresh, flavourful rosé wines, giving them the chance to complement not just sweet dishes, but complex savoury ones too. To find your favourite pink, try sampling a selection from different wines. If you’re not sure where to start, Normandie Estate’s Karen rosé is always guaranteed to be a winner.
