Bon Amis at Bloemendal
Surrounded by verdant vineyards and just a hop, skip and jump away from Durbanvilles’s CBD, Bloemendal’s Bon Amis restaurant is a firm favourite with locals and visitors from afar. The rustic and picture perfect setting is the ideal backdrop for family meals that range from leisurely set breakfasts, (with all the bells and whistles, including beef sausage and confit cherry tomato) to an a la carte menu (highlights include slow-braised spicy beef shin) and mouthwatering set lunches and dinners (the devilled beef burger with smoked cheddar cheese gets our vote). Gazebo picnic packages – complete with a selection of sushi, cold cuts and Waterlily wine – are also on offer. Making sure that your little ones do not feel left out, their kids’ menu boasts all kinds of treats, ranging from breakfasts such as choc chip flapjacks with maple syrup and moreish milkshakes with flavours like bubblegum, milo and more…
Diemersdal Farm eatery
With a seasonal menu that changes constantly and a laidback farm atmosphere, this lovely countryside-style restaurant is the perfect complement to the fine wines that the Louw family has been producing for the past six generations. With veggies and herbs from the garden, homemade pickles and preserves and freshly baked bread, it’s a recipe for success and the items on the menu are without fail fuss-free, full of flavour and tailor-made for quality time to savour with your family. Recent highlights have included a black mussel risotto with Parmesan, crispy garlic, celeriac remoulade and palate-pleasing roasted sirloin with bone marrow, caramelised onion, XO sauce and crispy root vegetables. There’s always a special Sunday lunch menu that also changes according to seasons and current highlights in the lineup include an aubergine and labneh salad and a pear and passion fruit strudel.
Eat at Altydgedacht
Relaxed and rustic and open for breakfast and lunch, Altydgedacht offers a real farm experience – with top-notch farm-style food to boot. Here, you can opt for a memorable meal outside under the inviting trees, or an authentic Winelands experience and choose a table inside the 300-year-old barrel room. On the menu, you’ll find signature dishes like their famous chicken pot pie (with a creamy roast chicken and mushroom filling, served with a fresh salad and rustic cut chips) – a hit with young and old, and there are also various delicious platters, each filled to the brim with moreish treats and, of course, fresh farm bread to mop up all the goodies. The burgers are out of this world and even include an option with a Kudu patty…need we say more? And for the kids, there are perfectly prepared calamari and chicken strips, toasted sarmies galore and ice cream cones with sprinkles – plus babychino’s and steri stumpies on the drinks menu too.
