Physical activity for kids forms part of early childhood development and goes a long way to keep boredom at bay. Ria Mncube supports the idea of fit, happy kids by promoting outdoor play. Her business, FitnessAlive Sport and Fitness Academy, combines fun and exercise for all age groups.
How did your business start?
I started a business when I struggled to put my honours degree in sport science to use. I used to work in one of the branches of a reputable gym and it would frustrate me to wake up each day simply to put weights back on the rack. I had so much to offer, just no platform to do so. I started FitnessAlive Sport and Fitness Academy in 2015 and we opened the Westwood Mall branch on 4 August this year.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
I operate from the Motion Inc Indoor Sports Arena at the Westwood Mall, which is within a residential area and very central to attract clients. The sports centre itself is new and they’re open to trying different things. They never had a kid’s fitness programme, so it was a good fit.
How did you find your premises?
I try to keep up to date with news relevant to sport and new facilities in KwaZulu-Natal. I came across an advert for the sports arena and contacted them to ask about using their facilities.
Why are they ideally suited to your business?
The arena is inside a mall, so parents can do their shopping while the kids are having
fun.
Who are your neighbours?
The Planet Fitness gym, which is great for bringing new clients to me.
What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
The rent is high, but we have reached a rental agreement that works for both parties.
How many people visit your business each day?
I see about 20 kids a day.
Do you have any expansion plans?
I have a branch in Durban North and am currently working towards setting up something in Pietermaritzburg, Ballito and my hometown of Richards Bay.
Do you operate online as well?
I have active Facebook and Instagram (@111fitnessalive) accounts and will open a website soon.
What’s your most popular item?
Kids enjoy the netball training, soccer, volleyball, basketball, aerobics and fitness training.
