Avant-garde shopping has an allure that trumps retail stores. Customers have the benefit of personal attention and pieces of clothing that are not mass-produced.
Fazila Ariff’s 25-years in the clothing industry gave her the industry expertise to open the retro and trendy clothing store, Fuzzy Collection, at the Stables Lifestyle Market.

How did your business start?
I’ve always loved working with fashion and the various fabrics and designs, and had a flair for putting ranges together that suit people’s lifestyles. I decided to start my own small clothing business that is different from normal retail stores to cater to this smaller market but which is more rewarding.

Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
The market is situated near the old rugby stadium and the new market horse stables. The market provides for a really arty venue with ample safe parking that caters to an eclectic market.

How did you find your premises?
I was referred by the bookstore owner who operates in the stall next to mine, and who has been at the market for over 20 years. Another stall owner, Kevin Ellis, who runs a vintage store, also suggested that I would be a perfect fit for the market.

Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
The market attracts people that are not mall shoppers. They want personal attention and enjoy the diverse range of clothes I provide.

Who are your neighbours?
A bookstore and a sports store.

What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Shop rentals vary according to the size of the stalls but the average stall pays about R2,500 per month. We only trade on two evenings a week and Sundays.

How many people go through your store each day?
The foot traffic isn’t as big as in boutiques and malls, so it’s difficult to estimate.

Do you have any expansion plans?
There are no expansion plans at the moment.

Do you operate online as well?
I don’t sell online but I do advertise online.

What’s your most popular item?
My dresses sell very well as they are simple and classic.
