A new gastro pub in the heart of the city’s rapidly growing Baakens Valley green lung has all the right ingredients to become a firm favourite for Bay foodies.

Gunston’s Gastro Pub

Fun flavours, good service and a carefully thought out wine list should spell major success for Gunston’s Gastro Pub. Opened in July, the restaurant run by well-known PE brothers Nic, Jonathan and Tim offers top quality fare in an unpretentious setting. There is seating available inside, on a deck and outside, and the decor is minimal with the modern bar as a focal point.

What’s on the menu?

A reasonably priced starter menu offers fun food like Buffalo wings, elegant offerings like Peking duck spring rolls, and some creative dishes like mac and cheese balls. The main menu is varied and interesting with staples like burgers and pizza standing side by side with more unique dishes like the Guinness pie and pork chops with apple.

The rosemary lamb chops with mash were a winner as was the beer-battered fish and chips with a side of coleslaw. What’s clear is that strict attention to detail is paid from sourcing fresh ingredients, to cooking the food and plating it in creative ways.

Daring drinks

There’s a fantastic mix of easy-drinking wines with some real sophistication thrown in for good measure. Well-priced La Motte, Pierre Jourdan, Haute Cabrière and Beyerskloof can be found along with your pricier Rupert & Rothschild.

Draught beers are also available on tap and an extensive bar is on hand for those looking for something a little stronger.
