Miles away from Cape Town’s shark cage diving adventures or Durban’s big swing over the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Johannesburg has made its own name as being a hotspot for adventure. From bungee jumping to paragliding and zip lining over the Magaliesberg, the areas in and around Joburg are filled with opportunities to get your blood pumping and enjoy an incredible day out. Here, we round up three of our favourites.
Bungee jump the Orlando Towers
An adrenaline-inducing experience for native South Africans and visitors alike, the Orlando Towers bungee jump has earned its reputation as one of the top attractions in SA for thrill-seekers. An intense 100m off the ground, the bungee launches off a jump deck suspended between the two towers, giving jumpers the chance to take in the incredible view from one of Soweto’s most famous landmarks before taking the plunge. If bungee isn’t quite your thing, the towers also offer internal and external tower swings and base jumping.
Paraglide with Attitude for Altitude
If you fancy yourself as more of a glider than a jumper, Attitude for Altitude is a paragliding Academy in Hartbeespoort that’ll let you have an adventure in the air. If you’re not quite sure if you want to go in for the full course and get your license, you can book a tandem flight with the Attitude for Altitude team and see the beauty of Gauteng from the sky without the pressure of being in control of the journey. If you decide that you have a head for heights after the tandem flight, sign up for a course and have the price of your tandem flight discounted.
Zip line through the Magaliesberg with Ama Zwing Zwing
Made up of seven slides and 10 platforms, the Ama Zwing Zwing Zip Line Tour is a thrilling way to take in the beauty of the Magaliesberg Mountains. Just 40 minutes outside of Joburg at the Amazingwe Lodge, the tour stretches over 1,3km and reaches heights of 14m to platforms towering over the ground. Appropriate for anyone from 7 to 75, it’s the perfect exhilaration for even the smallest adventurer.
