Going to the movies is a favourite pastime for many. A new release (and settling in with popcorn and a cool drink) can be enjoyed with friends, or celebrated with memorable first dates. But you can also take it up a notch at some of Cape Town’s luxury cinemas with a difference.

The Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema

On entering the Grand Daddy Hotel, you’re handed an old-fashioned movie ticket and escorted in the lift to the top floor. Exit the elevator, and you’ll find yourself in the Pink Flamingo Cinema’s rooftop bar, with the most astonishing views of the city. Amid neighbouring skyscrapers, lights twinkle as far as the eye can see, while traffic hums far below.

Once ensconced on a comfy couch with a blanket, complimentary hot chocolate and snacks are served, and the movie begins. Nothing spells indulgence like a cool city breeze coupled with a fleecy blanket for warmth, while watching your favourite film under the night sky.

Nu Metro Scene

Add Scene VIP at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront to your bucket list if you’re looking for a VIP vibe. Sip on a delicious cappuccino in the exclusive lounge while you relax and people-watch, and pre-order a light meal or drink from the menu – to be delivered to you by ushers at designated times during the movie.

And what looks like a typical movie theatre is, however, so much more – plush reclining seats allow you to enjoy the show in luxurious comfort.

Imax Theatre

You might remember this gem from a few years back; Ster Kinekor Cape Town has brought back the Imax with a bang.

In a typical cinema set-up, an usher will greet you at the door. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a “love seat” – a two-seater couch – like we did. 3D movies are always a treat and, you’ll soon find yourself submerged in the cinematic rollercoaster presented by the gigantic, curved Imax screen. A must-do this holiday season.
