Rock88
Corner Lynnwood and January Masilela
This is not just a restaurant – this is an experience. And with specials like the “Big Boy Challenge”, which is only available on the first Wednesday of every month, and entails that whoever can finish the 1.5kg rump steak, 2 portions of chips and 1x 500ml draught in an hour gets it for free – what’s not to love? For great cuts of meat, the warmest welcome and of course, a wide variety of beers and drinks, Rock88 is legendary. The history of the name of the restaurant is bittersweet: Eddie and Cecilia van Niekerk, owners and founders of the infamous Groenkloof Butcheries, are legendary for providing the best-quality meat in the area since 1962. The late Eddie was passionate about classic cars and owned an Oldsmobile with a Rocket 88-engine. The restaurant’s name is in his honour.
Spice – the Indian Restaurant
Lynnridge Mall, 1 Jacobson Drive
This is Indian food at its very best and from the perfectly prepared starters (such as paneer chili or the delicious prawn-and-tomato-combo) to mouth-watering main dishes from the tandoor oven. Some highlights include the lamb vindaloo, lamb badami (with cashews and almonds), Aloo gobi matar (cauliflower, potatoes and peas is served in a classic copper degchi on a smart little burner) and chicken dal – a traditional South Indian madras-recipe made with yellow lentils. Nothing is left to chance and every small detail here is a delight (think freshly fried poppadums, delicately rolled up into cones, with a tantalising mint sambal, lemon pickle and sweet fruit sambal). The best insider tip? Sharing is the name of the game – so be sure to order a variety of dishes and make up a delicious platter of goodies that’s affordable to boot.
