With cities like New York and London leading the way when it comes to stellar food markets that celebrate fresh produce and knit communities together, Cape Town was once again totally in step with global trends and its food market scene has grown exponentially over the past decade. Offering everything from a market borne out of a humble inner-city food garden sprouting up (and turning into quite and institution) to a cosmopolitan hotpot of the most well-known foodie-nistas of the Mother City, there is something for everyone.

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market Day:

Way back in the day, this market was actually held at the garden in Oranjezicht, but it has grown so much in recent years that it’s now become quite an institution, taking up a vast stretch of space in Granger Bay and the V&A Waterfront, where patrons and tenants have more than enough room to spread out and enjoy all the wonderful delights on offer – from a wide variety of organic fruit and veg; free-range meat, eggs and dairy; utterly divine food to enjoy right there and a whole host of gardening goodies. Held every Saturday, there are many reasons to make this a regular family outing, including:

  • Dogs are welcome (please just note that there are rules pertaining to them and they must, for example, be kept away from produce, plants, and other food products)
  • Various activities to keep your kids entertained, such as story telling, planting and crafts
  • Free Wi-Fi, courtesy of Vanilla Internet Services
