Maverick Design is a creative agency that conceptualises creative campaigns, brand strategy and consumer activations. Yaseen Khan and Kameel Kalyan of Maverick Design began their collaboration eight years ago, but last year, they moved to Morrison Street.
YN: How did your business start?
Yaseen: Maverick Design was an idea founded just over eight years ago, initially as a way to direct freelance work. Since then, the idea has evolved and grown into an organic agency capable of providing a full spectrum of services with a hands-on and personal approach.
YN: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
Yaseen: 8 Morrison Street is at the heart of the urban revitalisation that is the Rivertown district. It’s a unique social collaboration between creatives that has crafted its own identity in the city, allowing expression and freedom without limitations or boundaries. It was the perfect fit.
YN: How did you find your premises?
Yaseen: The building was the home of The Morning Trade market for some time, and was host to several events. When we heard that they were developing a work space, we immediately placed our names onto the waiting list.
YN: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
Yaseen: The location, facilities and atmosphere are a true representation of Durban’s cultural and creative diversity. We would be hard-pressed to find a location with such easy access and spirit.
YN: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Yaseen: Prices are competitive, given the development, with 10m2 from R3,500 per month.
YN: Do you have any expansion plans?
Yaseen: Well, the business is growing, which is a positive given the current economic climate, and our levels of service and their offerings is expanding on a monthly basis. We would look at hiring new team members as the workload increases.
YN: Do you operate online as well?
Yaseen: We manage the social media presence for several international and local brands. However, while we strongly believe that the digital space is the future, we still believe in tactile and physical experiences.
YN: What’s your most popular item?
Yaseen: Our personalities
