There’s no shortage of great restaurants on the Garden Route, and travellers exploring the holiday towns from Mossel Bay to Knysna are in for a culinary treat this summer. The latest addition to the burgeoning restaurant scene is Monet’s, on Fancourt Estate outside George.

Although set in the central-hotel building, the restaurant is open to residents and visitors, and offers panoramic views over the first tee on Fancourt’s Outeniqua golf course.

Best Table

If you want to keep an eye on the fairways it’s best to book a table on the spacious terrace, where cosy couches and wooden tables offer alfresco dining with a view of the golf and the distant Outeniqua Mountains.

What’s on the menu?

The menu at Monet’s is inspired by French bistro cuisine, with an occasional Asian influence. Expect the likes of moules mariniere served with a rustic baguette, or hand-chopped beef tartare. When the clouds roll in, as they often do in the afternoon, the grilled sirloin with thick-cut fries is a good choice.

Across the menu prices are fair and the portions generous, with a good mix of hearty dishes for hungry golfers alongside lighter options. The open sandwich of smoked salmon topped with red onions, capers, avocado and cream cheese was especially good. The small sushi selection may seem out of place alongside such bistro staples, but the chef assures me that the resident golfers would revolt if it were taken off the menu.

To finish, there is a small selection of French classics including crepes suzette with Grand Marnier-infused ice cream, and an apple tarte tatin. Or have a look in the pastry display for the day’s freshly baked cakes and tarts. A local told me in hushed tones that one shouldn’t ever miss out on the carrot cake.

As you leave, a small deli section will tempt you to stock up on home-made pickles and jams, and freshly baked breads and pastries.
