Morningside is an affluent suburb to the north of Sandton, with many older homes on sprawling properties, along with a number of new developments, commercial developments and exclusive shops and restaurants. For an area so close to Sandton, Morningside offers a quiet escape with leafy streets and green areas where residents walk their dogs and children play.
According to Carol Berchowitz, Vered area specialist for Morningside, sales in Morningside have always been consistent. “There’s a demand for the area, be it that it’s a first-time young, yuppie buyer looking to reside close to the Sandton CBD, Stock Exchange and all the banks, young married couples looking to buy townhouses of which there are an abundance, or the affluent families who are looking to purchase some of the best, most beautiful homes in Sandton.”
She adds that there are still large properties as well as those that have been subdivided and on which stylish new homes have been built.
Alexander Petrovic, who works in IT, came to South Africa from Serbia 25 years ago. He first stayed in Bedfordview, but a number of people from the Serbian community lived in Sandton and Morningside, so he started spending more and more time in the area. He moved to Morningside in 1998, and finally into his current complex in 2001.
“I come from Belgrade, which is a cosmopolitan city with good shopping malls. I needed to be close to a nice shopping centre so I could get good espresso in the morning. Back in the day, it was a huge challenge to find a proper espresso here, so I was looking for a mix of work, food and community.”
He found it all in Morningside, and his apartment suits his needs. It’s in a nice complex and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and, most importantly for Alexander, it allows pets. “This is very important because I have two cats.”
Vered’s Carol says that one of the main reasons for the consistent demand for properties in Morningside are the excellent schools in the suburb and its surrounds. She lists Redhill and Crawford as two of the best and says that Sandton Junior Pre-primary, Grayston Preparatory School and Montrose Primary in Parkmore are sought-after government schools in the area. “There are several good creches,” she adds.
Alexander says that he used to spend a lot more time at Sandton City, but now, with the revamp of the Morningside Shopping Centre, he shops closer to home. He has found that all-important espresso at Tasha’s – either in Morningside or in the newly revamped Village Walk, which he says is quieter. For lifestyle shopping, Sandton City is still hard to beat. “It’s easy if you know your way around. You can get anything you need there, whether you need to buy socks or a computer.”
For spending time out of doors, he enjoys going to the Morningside Country Club, where he sometimes runs and is considering taking up tennis. “It’s convenient and safe,” he says.
Chef Coco Reinarhz opened Épicure restaurant in Morningside in April last year. “The intention was to offer local and international visitors a taste of the different cuisines available in our beautiful continent and present them in a modern way,” says Coco. “The inspiration came from my different visits in Africa. I always eat local food wherever I travel.”
He says he chose Morningside because Sandton is the financial capital of the continent, and Morningside offers the best of both the residential and the corporate world. He draws on both worlds for his customer base. “Our guests at Épicure are a mixture of corporate and neighbours who want to taste the sophisticated cuisine of Africa in a relaxed and calm atmosphere,” he says.
With its eclectic mix of commercial and residential, expansive homes and compact apartments, it seems that Morningside has something for everyone, all a stone’s throw away from some of the leading business and retail hotspots in the city.
