With years of experience in the advertising industry, former Ogilvy & Mather creatives Diogo Mendonça and Marcus von Geyso founded Blacksmith Collective less than two years ago. They provide access to a vast network of industry experts who specialise in solving creative problems. They chat with us about their Rivonia-based business.
How did your business start?
We’ve always been entrepreneurs at heart and decided to start a production collective that would do things a little differently. We build teams that are unique to each job, depending on the requirements and their expertise, from our wide network of freelancers. We opened our first office in Rivonia in January with minimal staff, low overheads and we operate nationally.
Why did you choose this area to set up offices?
Rivonia is conveniently located close to our clients, our homes and central business districts, with easy access to the highway. The building was essentially a blank canvas we could mould into the creative space we needed.
How did you find your premises?
One of our regular post-production suppliers found the building and they were keen to move in. They approached us and asked if we would be interested in leasing the building with them.
Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
They are close to various agencies, creative hubs and our clients. In addition, we have a whole production/creative department in house now consisting of various other companies. So we’ve built a real collective in these buildings.
Who are your neighbours?
Velocity Africa, The First Order and Kabuki.
What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Very competitive.
How many people visit your business each day?
Since we’re a project-based business, some days we have no clients coming through and at times more than 25.
Do you have any expansion plans?
We’d like to expand locally in 2019 and then internationally.
Do you operate online as well?
Yes, we offer services to businesses globally. Our website and social media pages for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have information.
What’s your most popular service?
Content production and insights. For more information on the Blacksmith Collective, phone Diogo on 076 309 8998 or Marcus on 082 635 7994, or visit the website.
