Brunch offers a range of stationery from the Czech Republic, a selection of Washi tape from Japan and printed goodies from local and international illustrators. Co-owner Telri Stoop tells us more about the store.
How did your business start?
My business partner, Steven McKimmie, and I started Brunch in November 2017 as an extension of our graphic design business, Paper Snap. It’s been a long-time dream of ours to have a space where we can sell stationery that we love, along with some beautifully illustrated products from local and global illustrators.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
44 Stanley is a leafy creative retail hub in Milpark, so it was a no-brainer to start a shop here.
How did you find your premises?
Our first client back in 2009, Vicky Ross – the previous owner of Park Cafe in Parkwood – is now the marketing manager for 44 Stanley. She asked us if we knew of anyone looking for a space. We did – us!
Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
The space is large and perfectly suited to host our shop, Brunch, and design studio, Paper Snap.
Who are your neighbours?
Chocoloza, a Belgian chocolate shop and lounge; Smir Design, a store that sells beautiful rugs; and L8 Cafe, a delicious panini and burger bar.
What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
Milpark is a thriving business hub. The rental prices were less than we expected for such an established high-end space, so we couldn’t be happier.
How many people visit your business each day?
We’re still fairly new and people are getting to know us. However, Saturdays are our busiest days as most people come through to the precinct then.
Do you have any expansion plans?
Not at the moment, except to employ a shopkeeper to help over weekends.
Do you operate online as well?
We have an Instagram page and plan to have a website later this year.
What’s your most popular item?
Currently, it’s greeting cards from South African illustrators.
