A mashup of all things to make you feel good, Mash Boutique combines luxe fashion, jewellery, gifts and decor. Mostly individual locally-made pieces, there are a scattering of international brands to complement the natural chic feel of the store. Owner Tamryn Thomson tells us about starting the store on Regent Road in Sea Point and their recent expansion.
How did your business start?
Some would say it’s in the “fam”. I was luckily part of Nap Living lifestyle stores in Cape Town and Joburg for eleven years with my mom. Mash was created three years ago to share loved products and designers in one space with a cause. We mostly showcase clothing and accessories with a small selection of quality homeware and gifting. There is a strong presence of natural elements combined with fashion and trends. We consistently team up with individuals or designers to create product lines that enable us to donate to animal welfare, a soft spot for me.
Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
To be honest, it happened by default. I was on the waiting list for another space and took the Sea Point shop temporarily. Three years later we’re still here, happy as can be and have recently expanded. It just feels like home.
How did you find your premises?
It helps to have agents as friends. Thank you, Andrew Miller.
Why is the premises ideally suited to your business?
There’s such a variety of restaurants, shopping, fitness, beauty, convenience and other services in this small area of Sea Point. There’s a strong presence of young entrepreneurship which is inspiring to be surrounded by. You can get a lot done, all within walking distance which is convenient. We’re just lucky to be one of those stops.
Who are your neighbours?
For eating out, we have Jarryds Espresso Bar + Eatery (best eggs Benedict), Kleinsky’s Delicatessen, Mischu, My Sugar, Scheckter’s Raw, One Juice, Sundoo and Three Wise Monkeys. For shopping, there’s Blink, The Lot and Unseen. Fitness studios include Sweat 1000 and Wild Thing Moves. Your beauty needs are taken care of at McQueens Pride & Groom, Dante Wellness Spa and Sorbet. We’re also near The Point Mall and Da Luz Mall.
What are the rental prices like in the area?
As any small business owner knows, running a business comes with its challenges – it’s up to you how you roll with them.
How many people visit your business each day?
I have no idea, but we are super happy with the consistency.
Do you have any expansion plans?
We have recently doubled the size of our Sea Point store making way for more selection. The one side has romantic shades of dusty pink and emerald greens to plate more luxe products, and the other a natural colour palate for our everyday basics.
Do you operate online as well?
We sure do. For all your gifting needs, our online shop has it all.
What’s your most popular item?
Jewellery and anything to do with plants. The Mash root boxes have proven to be a staple.
