In our series New to the Neighbourhood we introduce you to someone who has just chosen their new home – and neighbourhood – and what they love about it.

Carley and Matthew Lowe recently bought a 60-year-old house in leafy Newlands. With a charming front porch and a fireplace for the chilly winter evenings, they knew they’d have to act quickly to snap up this property in the very desirable Southern Suburbs. Carley tells us what she loves about her new home and neighbourhood.

How did you find your property?
We first saw it online on Private Property and immediately phoned to arrange a viewing. After going to take a look at it, we made an offer the following day. The property had only been on the market for three days!

What do you wish you’d known before you started looking?
Everything worked out well for us, so there really isn’t anything I’d have done differently. Our agent Heather, from Pam Golding Properties, was amazing and the whole process was simple and stress-free.

What do you love about your new home?
I love that it’s a double-story house. I’m not sure why, I just do. We’ve done a bit of work to modernise the house, so it has an old-home feel with contemporary touches. And I absolutely love my new kitchen. Matthew loves the fireplace, which we use most evenings; it creates a lovely cosy atmosphere.

Did you know exactly which area you wanted to live in?
We were pretty set on Newlands. We saw some great houses in other areas, but they never felt quite right. Newlands feels like home.

What’s your favourite thing about the area?
It’s beautiful, peaceful and very conveniently located – close to lots of restaurants, shops and Cavendish Square mall. We love taking our dogs for a walk in nearby Liesbeek Park, and being close to so many good schools will be a bonus if we have kids in future. We also have family close by, so we’re enjoying spending more time with them.

Where’s your favourite local coffee spot?
The Vineyard Hotel, which is just across the road from us. We love sitting on the patio and enjoying the beautiful garden and Table Mountain views.
