There’s something to be said for the classics and when it comes to tried- and-trusted establishments such as Den Anker (which has been one of the grande dames in the Waterfront for well over two decades now), as well as Harbour House, whose flagship restaurant in Kalk Bay needs no introduction, you simply cannot go wrong.

With a line-up of mouthwatering fresh seasonal treats ranging from crayfish to green and white asparagus, to succulent scallops and North Sea shrimps especially flown in from Europe, Den Anker offers all the bells and whistles, and there’s plenty of tantalising South African delicacies too. Patrons can pick and choose from the weekly specials, or opt for some of the restaurant’s iconic offerings – including the perfectly prepared pepper steak with its legendary sauce and moreish mussel pots with frites and mustard mayonnaise. Seafood takes centre stage and the seared tuna here is simply unforgettable. And to round things off, this Belgian eatery’s dark chocolate mousse is reason enough to keep coming back for more…

Harbour House

A pristinely crisp, white setting (choose between cosy tables inside and the brilliant deck outside); superlative service; and freshly caught South African seafood prepared to perfection – that pretty sums up the sheer joy of being treated to a meal at this sister restaurant of its namesake further south. Giving serious attention to making every item on the menu a gourmet masterpiece, Harbour House’s scintillating array of dishes include everything from perfectly plump oysters to seafood soup, mouthwatering gazpacho, flavourful ceviche and a tian of prawns to Mozambican-style peri-peri tiger prawns and various platters, including a sushi feast, a shellfish meal and a seafood platter simply bursting at the seams with tasty calamari, mussels, prawns, crayfish and line fish. With the abundance of fresh fish on offer, diners can also take their pick from the catch of the day (options often include angelfish, kingklip or yellowtail). Oh, and there’s plenty of red meat on the menu too (think melt-in-your-mouth Karoo lamb and beef tataki flavoured with chilli and sesame)…
