A trend-led collection of bespoke playroom must-haves

Creating and rearranging her five-year-old’s bedroom decor led to Genevieve Motley following her passion in design, and creating her business Olly Polly.

How did your business start?
Inspired by the craftsmanship and fresh-air aesthetics of Scandinavian interiors, I began designing pieces that would grow with my daughter. Shortly after producing my first designs, friends began placing orders and employing me to style their children’s bedrooms.

Why did you choose this area to set up shop?
My business is run from home on Durban’s South Coast in Amanzimtoti. I’ve built wonderful relationships with suppliers in the area and love the sense of family that comes with a smaller city.

How did you find your premises?
My premises are based at my home as this allows me to be flexible and family orientated.

Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?
There are many talented women entrepreneurs, which brings a great sense of community. The beautiful Book Boutique is just around the corner from my home, making a perfect venue to meet clients.

Who are your neighbours?
I live around the corner from Rockview Road, which has become somewhat a creative hub, with little boutique shops and trendy coffee shops. The Galleria shopping mall is just five minutes away and is home to the likes of Typo, H&M and Cotton On.

What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?
I haven’t had to look into this, as the beauty of my business is that it is run purely online.

How many people go through your store each day?
My customers come from all over the country, as I function as an online store and run successful Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Do you have any expansion plans?
I’m constantly bringing out new products, and I’m looking to expand the interior styling side of my business this year. Being a mom myself, I know the importance of blending comfort with style to create practical spaces that children will love.

Do you operate online as well?
Most of my business happens online through my online shop (ollypolly.co.za), Facebook and Instagram accounts.

What’s your most popular item?
My staples have always been my wooden baby gyms, teepee shelves and house shadow boxes. However, since the launch of my swan princess and unicorn wall hangings last month, I can’t seem to keep up with them.
