The inimitable Ricksha Bus:
While Cape Town and Jozi offers hop-on-hop-off city sightseeing busses, Durban has its very own Ricksha Bus and this scenic tour of Durban’s city centre is an absolute must for visitors to the city. It’s slightly different to its counterparts in the Mother City and Egoli in the sense that you remain on the bus for the trip, but this laidback approach is all the more rewarding thanks to the fascinating route that only requires you to sit back and take it all in. From the Victoria Street Market to Francis Farewell Square, the beachfront, Berea, Florida Road, Mitchell Park, Morningside, the home of King Goodwill Zweletini, the Cube viewpoint, Wilson’s Wharf and the city centre, you’re in for a rollicking three-hour ride – with a tour guide on hand to answer all your questions and point out highlights like the oldest cemetery, City Hall, Moses Mabhida Stadium and Juma Musjid Mosque. There are two refreshment stops during the tour.
Green with Envy Nursery:
What a gem! Arguably the most beloved nursery in Berea (and beyond), those with green fingers simply cannot stay away from this delightful haven for all things green and growing. Providing a garden shopping experience of note, the function venue is another addition to this much-loved nursery, restaurant and gift shop – the perfect location for special events (catering for up to 60 guests). Surrounded by trees and tranquility, this green-friendly environment is tailor-made for anything from a kitchen tea to birthdays and baby showers.
Umbilo-Umhlatuzana River River Park:
This park is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and it features a variety of easy routes to stroll (or run) along and take in the natural beauty here. For example, there’s a 2km-route along the course of the Umbilo Canal to Carrington Heights and a 6km-route from Umbilo River all the way to the picture-perfect Roosfontein Nature Reserve. Resident bird species abound and the basic barbecue and picnic facilities as well as the playground for kids ensure that it’s a hit with families and groups of friends.
