For the discerning buyer looking for a cosmopolitan pad, Port Elizabeth has stunning penthouses in secure apartment blocks available. These prime beachfront homes appeal to buyers who are successful, on the move and don’t want to be hindered by maintenance. “I’d say they are people in their late 30s or 40s who often don’t have children. They want to feel secure enough to simply lock up and go,” Carol Crafford: Solomons Crafford Properties, says. While the apartments are predominately along the main beachfront, Crafford names Echo Edge off Park Drive and The Knysna in Walmer as other sought-after complexes.

Complexes in Summerstrand

In Summerstrand, complexes on Brookes Hill, as well as The Bay, Retief Plein and Summerstrand No. 1, have apartments supportive of an opulent lifestyle. Crafford has a R7,9m apartment on offer in King’s Lynn on Brookes Hill Drive. “It has open-plan living areas with 180-degree views of the bay and Port Elizabeth. Seamless wraparound stack doors open up to two spacious balconies. There are porcelain tiles throughout and the apartment is on two floors, taking up 391m².”

The three-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment has an open-plan area with great flow, under-floor heating, and both lounge and dining room balcony access.

The Bay Complex

Debbie Pughe-Parry: Pam Golding Properties, is marketing a R8,9m penthouse overlooking Pollok Beach in a complex called The Bay. It takes up one and a half floors and boasts an architecturally designed living space. “The ocean views are magnificent. It has four bedrooms and three bedrooms. Everything is open plan and very modern. It boasts high security with a biometric system and CCTV cameras,” she says. “The lift takes you directly up into the apartment and no one can enter without the code.”

The floors and built-in cupboards are beechwood and a spiral staircase leads to the upper level. “The floor-to-ceiling windows are PVC coated and double-glazed. The seamless glass windows are also stackable, and there’s an enclosed patio and gas braai. With only five owners in this complex, it has everything to offer the discerning buyer.”

Pughe-Parry has two other properties with exceptional marine views in Brookes Hill Drive. “The first is a R7,5m penthouse on two levels at Kings Terrace, with panoramic views of the bay and city. This apartment is classic, with breathtaking views, almost like the Clifton of Port Elizabeth.”

Also at King’s Lynn, Pughe-Parry has a R7,5m penthouse whose numerous selling points include high-end Miele appliances fitted throughout the kitchen. “It offers a more cosmopolitan, Manhattan-type outlook on living.”
