Retirees are spoilt for choice in KwaZulu-Natal with the wealth of property options available. The R50m achieved in sales at the launch of Lazuli Coastal Lifestyle Estate, an exclusive residential development for over-50s, shows demand is increasing.
Demand for luxury retirement
Although the traditional old age home remains popular with older buyers, newer retirement developments focus on active lifestyles for recent retirees. “People want luxury retirement living without compromising on their existing lifestyle,” says Glen Hesse, MD, Cenprop (developers of Lazuli). Facilities such as a clubhouse, gym, pool, tennis courts and restaurant are very attractive. “Buyers also like the comfort of knowing that they are buying into an estate which can cater for any healthcare requirements later in life without having to move again.,” says Hesse.
Be a part of a larger estate
Another trend is the retirement village forming part of a larger estate such as at Palm Lakes Family Estate, Ballito. “Retirees prefer to be part of a family community and not only in a retirement environment,” says Helene Botes of Palm Lakes Retirement Village. Living on a large estate allows retirees to be near to family without having to compromise on the independence of having their own property.
The newly launched Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village is tapping into a similar market. “Retirees are comfortable knowing they can continue to be a part of a community in an environment they know and are comfortable in,” says David Cameron of Cameron Property Group, developers of Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, whose target market includes the end user, people looking for homes for their parents and investors.
Something for everyone in KZN
The diversity of KZN’s retirement offering means that there is something suited to most retirees. Whether it is a variety of facilities or the size of homes on offer, ranging from studio apartments to freestanding homes and assisted living suites, or purchasing sectional title, freehold or life rights properties, all options are readily available in the province.
