Launched in November 2015, Roast is a “dual experience” coffee and eating spot adjoining The Goliath Comedy Club, owned by Jason, Donovan, Nicholas and Kate Goliath. Comedy shows take place every evening from Thursday to Saturday featuring local and international comedy acts, but you can head to Roast Cafe any day of the week from 7am to 7pm for a killer brunch, cocktail-fuelled lunch, or sociable dinner. Music sessions will start at Roast Cafe on the last Sunday in July and will run weekly every Sunday from 2pm.

Interior and menu items

The interiors of Roast Cafe were what struck me first: eye-catching, locally inspired cushions; striking copper light fittings; and unusual grey floor tiles. Niki Raciti and Fotis Drakopoulos are the menu directors at Roast, and are the team behind Walnut Grove in Sandton City. “We’re passionate about authentic, wholesome food and we make everything from scratch because that’s the way our grandma taught us. Our menu has an authentic Mediterranean palate with some Asian and Mexican flavours coming through,” says Niki.

I loved my vegetarian burger of beetroot and sweet potato rosti topped with Camembert, while my partner ordered the nachos with pulled pork and declared them delicious. We finished off with a gigantic slice of peanut butter and salted caramel cake, which is one of Roast’s most Instagrammed items, according to Niki.

Roasted menu

Other items on the menu that tempted me were the “design your own flatbreads”, the Vietnamese chicken noodle salad, and the Sicilian meatball sub. There are also rotating specials such as spaghetti gamberi with prawns, chilli and cream, and the tempting offer to “spike your own slushie” with Bacardi, tequila or gin. Roast is also known for its coffee and well-chosen wine list.

The place was packed at midday on a Thursday, full of office workers on their lunch break, or people enjoying a birthday lunch with friends. All in all, Roast is a unique dual-concept restaurant with a great atmosphere, striking decor and delicious food.
