Now that winter has bid us adieu, it’s time to celebrate and enjoy the thing our city is most loved for – its sunshine! Pack a picnic basket and enjoy a family meal at these picnic spots in and around Durban.

Makaranga

Just fifteen minutes’ drive out of Durban, you’ll find the Botanical Gardens at Makaranga. Explore the authentic Japanese Garden, wind your way through the indigenous and exotic tree-lined avenues or head to one of the beautiful ponds set within the grounds. Spread out your blanket and unwind in the sun, to enjoy a delicious daytime picnic with your family. If you don’t feel like packing your own basket, Makaranga has a delightful picnic menu that you can pick and choose from, that’s sure to keep everyone’s tummies full on a great day out.

 Krantzkloof Nature Reserve

The meeting place of two rivers, Molweni and Nkutu, Krantzkloof Nature Reserve boasts two spectacular picnic spots that both include braai facilities. You can enjoy a family picnic overlooking Kloof Falls or the Nkutu site in Valley Drive. A gate fee must be paid to gain access to the picnic sites.

If your family is keen on watersports or are avid birdwatchers, a day out at Shongweni Dam should be listed on your weekend itinerary. As it’s situated within Shongweni Nature Reserve, you may even spy a wild animal too while you’re enjoying those homemade sandwiches. Shongweni Nature Reserve is a National Heritage Site and a popular geocaching spot too.
