The 17th of March was originally a cultural and religious occasion, honouring the patron saint, Saint Patrick. It has since evolved into a worldwide celebration of all things Irish, which, apparently, can be narrowed down to beer, silly shenanigans and, of course, the colour green. Get into the vibe with these green drinks that will keep you feeling grand from sunrise to sunset.
Top O’ the Morning! (serves two)
Kick off your day with a green smoothie, which is not only delicious and nutritious, but will also keep you full and festive until noon.
Ingredients
3 cups baby spinach
2 cups almond milk
2 chopped bananas
Handful of pitted, pre-soaked dates
1 Tbsp chia seeds
Method:
Blitz all your ingredients in a blender until smooth. Pour into glasses and top off with some antioxidising chia seeds.
Shamrock Shake (serves one)
Treat yourself to a rich and creamy milkshake that will definitely put a spring in your step.
Ingredients:
2 cups vanilla ice cream
½ cup milk
½ tsp mint extract
4 – 8 drops green food colouring
Fresh mint
Whipped cream (optional)
Method:
This recipe is super simple. Pop everything (except the mint leaves) into a blender and pulse until creamy. Don’t blend too much – you don’t want it to become a warm liquid. Once you are satisfied with the consistency, pour into a tall glass, top it off with some whipped cream and garnish with mint leaves.
Pot ‘O Gold (serves one)
There’s nothing quite like a refreshing Martini at the end of a long day. Round up your friends and treat them to this green goodie.
Ingredients:
Ice cubes
60ml vodka
60ml sour apple liqueur
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 green apple
Method:
Fill a cocktail shaker to three-quarters full with ice. Add the vodka, sour apple liqueur and lemon juice, then cover and shake for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with thin slices of green apple.
