If you’re not going away then try these things to do right here

With the many public holidays this month it’s no surprise that Joburgers head for the bush, the beach, and the bright lights of other major cities. But while a break from the bustle might be great there’s still plenty to do right here instead.

Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves

Some of the most significant archeological discoveries in history have been found right on Joburg’s doorstep. About an hour’s drive away, Maropeng gives visitors a chance to go back in time and explore the birthplace of humanity. Spend a full morning at this World Heritage Site and buy a combined ticket which gets you entry into the Maropeng exhibitions and Sterkfontein Caves, where tour guides take you deep into the earth to see where it all started.

The Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort

Forget going all the way to Cape Town to reach great heights – the Harties Cableway offers incredible views of the beautiful Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam, and surrounding areas. Since its revamp in 2010, the cableway has become a perfect stop for those visiting the area, and a spectacular place to take in the scenery. With ample opportunity for hiking, eating, and exploring the fauna and flora, it’s the perfect place for the entire family to spend a day, and is also only about an hour out of Joburg.

Ballooning over Gauteng

Get up early and feel as though you’ve ventured into another world as you watch the sunrise from a hot air balloon. Venture just an hour out of Joburg to float above the Magalies River Valley – the area is full of options for balloon safaris, the perfect idea for an Easter weekend treat. Pack your camera, some binoculars, and a scarf – the wind can get pretty chilly when you’re up above the clouds.
